Auto-Paste

After transcription, Murmur needs to get text into the app you are working in. There are two ways it can do this, and you can choose which one to use in Settings > Dictation.

Auto-paste mode

In auto-paste mode, Murmur types the transcribed text directly at your cursor position. From your app's perspective, it looks like fast keyboard input.

When you trigger your hotkey, Murmur notes which app is currently active. After transcription finishes, it brings that app back into focus and inserts the text there — even if you switched to Murmur's own window or another app in the meantime.

This mode requires the Accessibility permission. If Murmur doesn't have it, auto-paste falls back to clipboard mode automatically. You can grant Accessibility access in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.

Clipboard mode

In clipboard mode, Murmur copies the transcribed text to your clipboard. You then paste it manually with Command-V.

Murmur preserves whatever was previously on your clipboard. After it copies the transcription, your original clipboard contents are restored — so you won't lose something you had already copied.

Clipboard mode works without any special permissions. It is a good fallback if you run into issues with auto-paste, or if you prefer to control exactly where text gets inserted.

Which mode to use

• Auto-paste is more seamless for rapid-fire dictation. No extra keystroke needed after speaking.
• Clipboard mode gives you a moment to review before committing — paste only when you are ready.

Streaming transcription

While you are recording, Murmur shows partial transcription results in the floating indicator. These are streaming previews — not final output — and may shift as the model refines its understanding of what you said.

The final text that gets inserted or copied is the completed transcription, not the streaming preview. Streaming is there so you can see that Murmur is hearing you, not to provide an editable preview.

If auto-paste is inserting text in the wrong app, make sure you are clicking into your target text field before triggering the hotkey. Murmur locks onto the active app at the moment the recording starts.
