Context Settings
Context-aware refinement lets the AI know where you are dictating — which app, which website, even where your cursor sits in a sentence — so the output matches its destination. These controls govern exactly what context Murmur may collect.
Context-Aware Refinement
The master toggle: "Helps AI understand where you're dictating for better accuracy." On by default. Turn it off and refinement still works, but generically — no app detection, no URL awareness, no cursor matching.
When enabled, an info disclosure lists what can be collected:
- App category detection (always available)
- Browser URL extraction (requires Accessibility)
- Window titles and editor file info (requires Screen Recording)
- Document paths (requires Accessibility)
Extract Cursor Position
"Capture surrounding text for smarter capitalization and spacing." On by default.
With this enabled, Murmur reads roughly 100 characters before and after your cursor, plus any selected text. The AI uses it to join your dictation seamlessly into existing text — lowercase mid-sentence, capitalized at a sentence start, correct spacing either side. Without it, dictating into the middle of a sentence often produces a stray capital letter or doubled space.
Permission level
Context collection scales with the macOS permissions you have granted. The pane shows your current level and what it unlocks:

Upgrade buttons appear when you are below Full, deep-linking to the right System Settings pane. Granting is always optional — every level degrades gracefully. See the Permissions Guide for what each permission does across the whole app.
Privacy
- Context is sent only to the AI provider you configured, only at the moment of refinement, and is not stored by Murmur.
- Window titles are read, never screen contents or images.
- No audio or transcription content is ever logged.
- Revoke any permission in System Settings at any time; Murmur adapts to the reduced level automatically.
Examples
The pane includes live before/after examples showing what context changes:
- Email app — greetings and sign-offs formatted properly
- Code editor — technical terms preserved, sentence-casing not forced
- Mid-sentence cursor — dictation joins without a spurious capital letter
