Teleprompter Modes

Murmur's Teleprompter is a beta feature that lets you read from a script while your speech is tracked in real time. There are three modes, each suited to different workflows.

Teleprompter is a beta feature. Accuracy and latency vary with your chosen speech engine and ambient conditions.

Starting a session

1. Open the Teleprompter section from the main sidebar.
2. Paste or type your script into the Script box. A live word count is shown, and a Clear button empties it.
3. Pick a mode (the mode cards are fully clickable) and adjust any settings — see Teleprompter Settings.
4. Start the session with Start in Main View, or Start in Floating View to read from the floating notch panel.

To end a session early, click Stop. Your session results are shown afterwards.

The three modes

The setup screen shows three mode cards — Live, Voice, and Auto.

Live

Live mode tracks your speech word-by-word and highlights the script as you say each word. The display scrolls automatically to keep the active line centered. This is the most accurate tracking.

• Latency: ~200 ms to 1 second, depending on the speech engine you choose
• Best for: presentations, voiceovers, and any time you want to see exactly where you are in the script

If you skip a section or ad-lib, Murmur fuzzy-matches within a short look-ahead window and re-anchors to your current position.

Voice

Voice mode scrolls the script while you are speaking and pauses automatically when you go quiet. No word-level recognition is used — it watches your microphone level against a threshold, so you can pause, breathe, or improvise and the script waits for you.

• Best for: casual readings, practicing speeches, or scripts where you want full control over pacing
• Pacing: scrolls at your configured words-per-second rate while you speak; a short grace period (about 0.35 s) prevents pausing on natural gaps between words

The sensitivity is set with the Voice Threshold calibrator — a live mic meter with a draggable threshold line. Set the line just above your quiet-room level so scrolling starts when you speak and pauses when you stop. See Teleprompter Settings.

Auto

Auto mode advances the script at a fixed words-per-second rate regardless of what you say. No microphone is used — it is a pure timer-driven scroll.

• Speed range: 1.0 to 5.0 words per second (average reading speed is ~2.5–3)
• Best for: news-style reading, or any situation where consistent pacing matters more than adaptive tracking

Following along

However you start a session, you stay in control of your position:

• Tap any line to jump to it. (New in 1.6) Click a line in the script — in the main view or the floating notch — and Murmur sets that line as your current position. Everything before it is marked as read, everything after as upcoming, and live tracking continues from there. Handy when you skip ahead or restart a paragraph.
• Scroll manually. (New in 1.6) You can scroll the script by hand at any time. Auto-centering resumes on the active line as you keep reading.
• Dimming. The active line is fully lit; lines above and below dim with distance, so your eye lands in the right place.

Script layout

(New in 1.6) A Script Layout control decides how your text is broken into lines for reading:

• Line-by-Line — wraps long paragraphs into short lines and centers the active line. Line length is set by Words per Line (see Teleprompter Settings).
• Original — keeps your own line breaks. Very long lines are still gently wrapped so the active line can stay centered.

Session results

After each session, Murmur shows how closely you followed the script:

• Adherence score — percentage of script words spoken as written
• Matched words — words from the script that were detected in your speech
• Skipped words — script words that were not detected
• Inserted words — words you said that were not in the script (ad-libs)

Results are saved to your History for later review.
